4th & Long: SV 6th Grade B Blue run wild, reduce Boerne to a Trickle Charge
The hype around the Smithson Valley 6th Grade B Blue team has been building for months now. A strong finish to the 2024 season along with the returning talent has everyone in the community, and possibly country, excited about their potential. At HCYFL media days, that potential resulted in a nearly unanimous vote for the SV Blue team to start as the preseason favorite to win the 6th Grade B division by coaches and media. Many experts have them hoisting the Super Bowl trophy at season’s end. Hype doesn’t always translate to the field. So, the question remains, is this team ready to prove those experts right?
All that excitement was ready to shoot out of the gate with both guns blazing in Week 1. But Mother Nature had other plans. The start of the season was delayed for another week. The disappointment of not getting on the field and playing Week 1 was visible throughout the entire week of practice. Would this cause the team to lose focus?
The Rangers responded in a big way with a 46-0 victory in Week 2 against the Boerne Chargers Silver squad. The offense scored at will scoring on nearly every drive of the contest while the defense didn’t allow one…. single…first down.
The scoring got started on a screen pass that Bradley “Hot Wheels” Wolverton took 35-yards to the house.
After Crew “Chief” Smith booted in the extra point, the Rangers led 8-0 and never looked back. Wolverton added a rushing score and ended the day with 86 yards rushing, 35 yards receiving, and a pair of touchdowns all in the first half. We were able to catch up with him after the game. “I'm here to kick butt and eat Skittles. And, I was all out of Skittles today." said Wolverton. "I gotta give them guys up front a lot of credit, the big sexy’s as coach calls them. The holes were huge today.” he continued. “We’re gonna have a big year if we can keep that up. I wanted to play the whole game and get in the endzone a couple more times, but we got some other guys the ball. It was a fun game.”
Nicholas “The Natural” Ocanas, another player that had a big day, ended the day with a couple of touchdowns of his own on 47 yards rushing and 27 yards receiving. He also recorded a interception on the defensive side of the ball.
“There's three things in life that's certain: Death, taxes, and you don’t throw on 24.” said Ocanas. “I've brought excitement back to the game. Travis Hunter may be the most talked about 2-way player, but I’m the best. Stay tuned because this show ain’t over.”
Landen “TeeDee” Cobb recorded his first career touchdown with an inside run that he bounced outside and punched in from the 12-yard line untouched.
“I’ve been saying for years that I should get the ball more. I’m athletic, smart with the ball in my hands, and I research fantasy football more than anybody else.” Cobb said. “If I were an option, I would have myself on my fantasy team. I might have to put a call into the Fantasy Footballers podcast and make sure they’re aware of my stats.”
Tanner “Sweet Feet” Lange nearly recorded his first touchdown right before the half as time expired. An exciting run where Lange raced around the end shedding tacklers before being taken down by the entire Boerne defense. The play sent the team and the stands into a frenzy. As soon as he got up, he was taken to the ground again by the entire Rangers team. “They said, 'Don't get caught.' It was the biggest thing running through my mind.” Lange said. “Well, I got caught. I guess that earned me the opportunity to be on the bottom of a dogpile from my own team. Some of them boys need to consider a diet.”
The Rangers came out with hair on fire and put the rest of the league on notice. Can they continue to live up to the hype? They get another chance to showcase their potential Saturday, September 20th on the road against the Kerrville Antlers.
